Borough Market is London’s oldest food market. In some form, it has been open for over a thousand years, serving local people locally produced food. This history is part of what makes it such a wonderful place to visit, as well as the great food and events that run through the year.
And, while visitors will get a flavour of this history when they visit, they won’t get a museum. Borough Market is a place of commerce, one that is full of hustle and bustle. It is somewhere anyone who loves food will love to visit.
Most of the food sold at Borough Market is locally sourced, and many of the traders also produce the food they sell. This includes farmers, fishers and bakers. There are also lots of artisan sellers at the market. They sell goods produced on a small scale, sometimes in their kitchens at home. This doesn’t mean the food on offer isn’t international. It is. The food on offer takes its inspiration from across the globe, just like London itself.
Borough Market doesn’t just sell food either. It looks to teach people about it. There are demo kitchens run throughout the year and talks on the future of food. A full list of events is available on their website, where you can also book a tour of the market.
There are also pop-up stalls where guest traders join regular stallholders selling their wares. Recently this has included vegan Vietnamese food and speciality teas. They don’t set up shop for long though, so visitors need to be quick if they want to see what’s on offer.
Opening Times
Borough Market is open six days a week, Monday to Saturday apart from
December, when they open seven days. They have a limited market on Monday and Tuesday, meaning not all
stalls are open. There is a full market Wednesday through Saturday when all stalls are open.
Opening times are 10 AM to 5 PM Monday to Thursday and 6 PM on Fridays. On Saturdays, the market is open from 8 AM to 5 PM.
